About El Calafate

High season begins in October and ends after Easter. These are the days with longer light hours, ideal for walks and excursions to enjoy activities outdoors. It is advisable to book accommodation well in advance and have fresh clothes for the day, warm clothing for the evening. Take sunscreens and visit the glaciers.
Out of season, from Easter to September, the days are short and cool, sunny and less windy than in high season. Between May and July, if the weather allows you, you may go ice skate on the frozen Round Bay.
Shopping hours in Calafate have minor variations between high and low season. Most services are available between 10 am and 10 pm. Some businesses close for nap time, between 1pm and 4pm.
Some souvenirs are essential to take from El Calafate, specially the ones based on the characteristic products of the area: sweet, alfajores and liquors, artisan chocolates, smoked. Other traditional purchases: crafts and native wood sculptures, ponchos, ruanas and other crafts tissues of sheep's wool, handmade spins and wovens industrially processed wool.
